Keeping Software up to Date
——-
Regardless of what software package you use to maintain your website, it is essential that you keep the software up to date. This will ensure that you have the latest bug fixes, as well as the most features. If you are using WordPress on your site, it is essential to keep both the software itself and any plugins up to date. The core software can update automatically, depending on your current version, but plugins are not automatically updated and need to be checked regularly. Out of date plugins can often be compromised by hackers, whereby they can infect your website and/or send out spam through your account. While there are security plugins you can install to monitor for hacking, the best solution is to prevent the exploit itself by keeping up to date. Here are some steps to take if you think your WordPress software has been hacked:

If you are using the ShopSite ecommerce software for your site, keeping it up to date will ensure that you have all of the latest features, and it will make sure that you are running a PCI compliant version, as required by your merchant account provider. The latest version of ShopSite is version 12, and another version (12 SP1) is due out right around the corner. ShopSite upgrades are seamless and don’t require any rework on your end. If you aren’t yet running the latest version, reference this link for more details as well as an upgrade request form:

If you are running Magento for your website, the latest version is 1.9.1. The version you are currently running would dictate how easy or hard it may be for you to upgrade to this latest release. Your developer may be the best resource for letting you know how complex your version would be to upgrade. If your version is too old, it may be best to upgrade a test version of your store prior to upgrading the live version. We do offer upgrade assistance, and have detailed information regarding this process in the following blog post:

If your site is utilizing something else besides the software packages mentioned above, e.g. Joomla, a PHP based cart, etc., it is still highly recommended that you keep them up to date. We chose to briefly touch upon those three because they are widely used on our network, but to confirm, all software packages should be kept up to date for both site security and features.
